It's always a frantic activity to load the bikes on to the train as bagage à main (accompanied baggage). Bikes can travel free with you on certain specified trains. It's very expensive to ship them by train so it's worthwhile to find these trains. When we are a group of 4, it's much easier than when it's just Carol and I. Here Heather holds the bikes while Peter and I begin the loading. With one exception (in 1997), railway personnel have never assisted us with the loading.
