In Grandouet (Calvados), the ancient Yvon Grandval pours us a
substantial sample of cider. We were then treated to similar samples
of poiré, an unpleasant (to my taste) beverage made in
the style of cider, but from pears instead of apples, followed by
pommeau, an apéritif made by mixing calvados brandy
with fresh apple juice (in the style of the Pineau des Charentes of
the Cognac region) and finally a splendid calvados, the famous
brandy of Normandy. Too much, since we still had about 20 km to go,
but a memorable stop.
