Kir!! Crème de cassis is actually an intense dark red colour. We carry a bottle with us as we go and buy a bottle of cheap white wine with which to make the kir. Then, when we arrive at our hotel Carol stands there with her braces still on her knees (looking sad) while I explain to the hotel clerk that she has problems with her knees when cycling (true) and would it be possible to have "quelques glaçons, peut-être dix ou douze pour les genoux" ('several ice cubes, perhaps 10 or 12 for her knees'). Armed with ice cubes we go to our room where I use a couple of cubes to cool the wine/cassis mix in the hotel's cups - not the normal thing to do but the wine and cassis are not as cold as they would normally be. So Carol puts the remaining ice cubes to use on her knees while we enjoy an end of cycling day kir. The bottle in this photo is "pre-mixed" kir because the cassis was almost used up so we emptied the rest of a bottle of wine into the rest of the bottle of cassis to save space in our bags.
